What we paint

Three kinds of work. Sixteen ways to book it.

Why the line is straight

Most of a paint job happens before the paint.

Prep

Fill, sand, caulk, prime

Nail holes, screw pops, cracked caulk at the trim, glossy old enamel that needs a bonding primer. Skipping this is how a paint job fails in year two.

Edge

Cut in by hand

Ceiling lines, trim lines, and the inside corners of an accent wall are cut with a brush and a steady hand, and checked in daylight before we call it done.

Product

The right paint for the surface

Scrubbable eggshell where kids and dogs live, flat on ceilings, enamel on trim and cabinets, and exterior products that flex through a Minnesota freeze.

Leave

Rooms back the way they were

Furniture returned, outlet covers on, floors clean, touch-up paint labeled and left with you.

Minnesota has two painting seasons

Exterior window is open. Interior season books from November.

Exterior paint needs the wall and the air above 50°F for a couple of days. Around here that is roughly May through mid-October. The other seven months are interior season.

Questions we get on the phone

Straight answers.

How long does it take to paint the inside of a house?

A single room is usually a day, two if there is a lot of trim or repair. A whole-house interior repaint on an average west-metro home runs about a week, working room by room so you are never out of the whole house at once.

Can you paint the outside of my house in October?

Often, yes. The rule is that the surface and the air stay above 50°F for a couple of days, and some exterior products go lower. Early October usually works. By late October we are watching the forecast day by day and will tell you honestly if it should wait for spring.

Should I paint my oak cabinets or replace them?

If the boxes are solid and you like the layout, painting is the better answer and a fraction of the cost. We degrease, sand, fill the grain if you want a smooth look, prime with a bonding primer and spray the doors off-site. If the boxes are particleboard and swelling, we will tell you to replace.

Do you work with builders on new construction?

Yes. We do finish painting for several custom builders in the west metro: primed walls, trim and doors, built-ins and cabinetry, on the builder's schedule. That is why so many of our photos are of brand-new rooms.
